The history of Mirabello and the Lake Como district

Mirabello is situated between Milan and Lake Como, an area that is known for its 500 years of experience in the field of textile production. The 15th century saw the development of silk production in this area. Silkworms were cultivated along the shores of Lake Como. After being dried and then loosened in boiling water, the silkworm casings were unrolled to obtain the precious silk fibres. In the beginning of the 20th century, small firms began to print silk fabric using silkscreen techniques (the origin of serigraphic printing).

In the 1950s, thanks to the popularity of the Gucci and Hermes scarves, an intense, local industry developed which involved the finest designers and stylists of the period. The first industrial companies, backed by a strong acquired know-how, began to apply a more sophisticated technology.
The first printers and the first large-scale producers of printing machinery came into existence then, and they continue to be some of the world's leading companies.
The lovely landscape of the Lake Como countryside with its fabulous villas (Villa d'Este, Villa Erba) and the splendid Bellagio, situated between the two branches of the Lake, have instilled a sense of beauty and craftsmanship. This, in turn, has produced a culture of good taste and quality which, with the advent of modern technology, has made this area one of the principal suppliers of the Italian fashion industry.

Mirabello was founded in 1978, opening a shop specialising in household linens in the artistic “via Brera” zone in Milan. The store is still today the point of reference for the Milanese as they shop for refined high-quality sheets, and for customers from around the world. In 1982, the company was established in the Lake Como district. Producing with the Mirabello brand name, it transferred the concept of fashion from the clothing industry to that of home textiles. Mirabello represents the point of contact between the creativeness and design world, and the textile production experience in the Lake Como district.

In 2008, Mirabello joined the Caleffi Group.
